Penns Meadow
PM field
Penns Meadow is a five-acre field on the boundary between Broseley and Barrow in Shropshire. The field has been a meadow since records began; it has never been ploughed.

Penns Meadow is owned by the Hoy family and managed by a group of local residents – the PennFriends.

Meadowland like this is increasingly rare, and it is even more rare for the land to be managed in the traditional way, as we try to do with Penns Meadow. That involves growing a hay crop, harvesting the hay in July or early August, grazing sheep on the aftermath in the autumn, and allowing the field to recover during the winter and spring. This kind of management is ideal for wildflowers and orchids, and for all kinds of wildlife.

The PennFriends group took on the management of the field in 2006 after a long period of neglect and over-grazing. We raise funds for the annual lease and running costs, and band together to work in the field when there are jobs to be done.

We have a bank account with Lloyds TSB. For those wishing to donate it is: “Penns Meadow” - account number 02958258 - bank code 30-18-55. Cash donations are also welcome; £40 pays for a month's rent or one cut of the grass. Please contact Phil Revell (01952 882055) or Michael Marriott (01952 883004) if you would like to volunteer or donate to the running costs.

Penns Meadow is supported by the town council in Broseley and the parish council in Barrow. The Broseley/Barrow
Local Joint Committee has donated funds to enable fencing to be erected and for hedgelaying to be carried out. We would like to thank both local authorities for their strong support for the project.
